HAM LibraryThe first phase of the new library system is in place. It also has a format that looks more like the Forum pages. This is due to the wider format needed for displaying lists of books. For now, you can just browse. You will be able to search by title and author, sort by any criteria, find all related book reviews, and order the book if you wish to purchase a copy. Members can borrow any book - just let the librarian know and she will bring it to the next meeting. It will cost you $1. This will help finance the purchase of more books. We would appreciate your assistance with our library. Any book donations, book reviews or other support input would be greatly appreciated. HAM has charitable / non-profit status so you may be eligible for a tax receipt.
Library Contact Donna: ham_librarian@yahoo.ca Regular BookingsSome thought has been given to having a weekly or bi-weekly library arrangement. To now, a sampling of 5 to 10 books are brought to eah HAM meeting. These are held once a month, except for June, July and August (no summer reading for you). This is often inconvenient for borrowers. If we were to come across decent space or opportunites (Like Sophie's brunches), the library would arrive. A good situation is the occasional Saturday or Sunday afternoon 'coffee, tea and books' meeting place. People perhaps would not have to be members, though it would also be a way of making contact with more potential members. Ideas and suggestions most welcome. Tech NotesUpdates as to what is being done and how it works, for those interested. The book information is kept in a 10 table relational database. Though it might seem like overkill, it means not having to deal with 6 different spellings of an author's name or 5 variations on 'Penguin', as in Penguin books, Penguin publishing, etc. It also has tables and fields to track in/out status, multiple reviews in HAM (or other) pages, and internally. As well, different media types are supported. Future features (other than the expected search capabilities) will include a suggestion box and a rating system. |
